Kerupuk Kulit And Satay Padang

Crispy cubes of deep fried cow/ox skin and sticks of beef and beef tongue skewered on a stick, that’s what the title of the blog is talking about today. Kerupuk kulit is like the epitome of my childhood, I think that’s probably one of the few snacks that I actually enjoyed as a kid whilst back in my grandma’s village in Sipirok, Sumatra. Apparently all I wanted to eat was french fries and not brown rice. But kerupuk kulit, gosh I could just munch on those and be happy. Mom adds these crispy fried squares into her fermented black bean beef stew, or taucheo daging. And those crispy cubes become gelatinous chewy awesomeness. Uugh I want some now.

Another delicious dish from my childhood is Satay Padang, whenever we would drive up from Jakarta to Bandung or vice versa we would stop along the way and have this delicious skewered meat that has a thick spicy yellow meaty sauce. The ones that I find in Singapore is just made from slices of beef. I miss the ones from Kuala Lumpur near Kampong Bahru that has cubes of beef and beef tongue. And the sauce was just perfect, the meat tender and simply delicious. I wish I was back in KL!

Sate Padang

My all time favourite comfort food, the satay padang, is finally available in Singapore. I have travelled to Malaysia and Indonesia just to eat this very dish. Compared to other types of satay which are readily available in Singapore, the satay Padang is uniquely different.

Firstly the sauce is a nice robust, savoury and spicy yellow sauce that’s thick instead of the chunky peanut sauce one gets to accompany a serving of satay. Secondly, the meat is usually boiled first and then the broth is used to make the sauce, so it’s full of meaty goodness, and then the meat is sliced thinly and threaded through with sticks and barbecued. Yum! Ketupat, which are rice cakes are cut into cubes, and then the sticks of satay Padang are placed on the mound, followed by a generous amount of that special sauce, and a flourish of deep fried shallots!

So today, after Isyak prayers at Sultan Mosque, my brother and dad noticed that there was a new restaurant, and then saw that it’s name was “Sate Padang”! So exciting!!! We immediately ordered 5 sets to takeaway to eat at home for dinner. It was supremely delicious! I haven’t had this dish for 6 years, and to have it finally is such a pleasure :) The meat was so tender, the sauce perfectly savoury and not so spicy, the cubes of rice cake soft and yummy. Definitely a must try for anyone who loves satay!

Resto Surabaya

What I always seemed to end up ordering at Resto Surabaya would be Ayam Penyet Kremes and Empek-empek with a a long cool glass of avocado juice to get rid of the spiciness of the sambal, shiok, but spicy. Anyways, this time round, I went there with Steph and she tried the Soto Lamongan. The soto is very unlike the  typical soto ayam, I think it has a lot more kunyit used in its rempah then the ones we usually have. There was also a new dish on the menu, Tahu Telur! Two thumbs up for the tahu telur which basically are cubes of tofu and egg fried together and served with a special sauce. Some places the sauce is just sweet soy sauce, but here the sauce was different, kinda like a gado-gado sauce sans its chunkyness and smoother and lighter.
